Happy Holidays!
I hope each of you had a wonderful Christmas/Chanukah/Holiday.
We took a very quick afternoon photo break on Christmas day so I could capture the boys in their matching union suits & puffy jackets. I think this may be one of the last times they let me take their picture in matching attire -- you can see on their faces they aren't overjoyed, ha!
I also wanted to show off Miss Lucky Claus in her cute little Santa hoodie. I've never dressed any of my dogs up before and now I wish I had! To see her "official" holiday greeting, please visit Lucky Dog Photography.

Another Thanksgiving come and gone, and the day was spent with much to be thankful for: solid cooking skills (very important, since holiday dinners all fall on me, ha!).......a nice long bike ride in gorgeous weather......a fine family feast (including visiting grandparents).......a final Longhorn victory over the Aggies (Texas Texas YEE-HAW!)......a husband whose hard work affords me much freedom with a dose of luxury......and these guys (and one girl-dog), who add so much joy to my life........

Thank You, God, for each and every blessing you have bestowed upon me. I am grateful beyond words.

This post is kinda lame. Apparently, in order to have a custom e-mail signature for my yahoo e-mail account, the image I want to use has to be on the web, and remain there. It's probably the same for my kimberlysarantakes.com account, and the gmail account I'm required to have in order to use my Android phone. So......I'm posting what I am using as my temporary logo (or maybe I'll keep it for awhile?) so I can drag & drop it into my yahoo signature.

I told you this post is lame. You'd think they would make it a little easier to make a custom signature.

So.....here goes.....and we'll see if it works!

Sadly, summer break is almost over. I wish I could say the same for this crazy excessive Texas heat. I'm grateful I got to travel this summer and escape it for a short while.....more on that later. Right now it's time to move along with The Miracle Book 2012 -- benefiting Dell Children's Medical Center of Central Texas.

For those who aren't familiar: The Miracle Book is a coffee table style / social engagement book filled with beautiful photographs of Austin children and families, most of whom are captured by a select group of local professional photographers. Each page sells for $500, all of which directly benefits Dell Children's Medical Center. Along with a page in the upcoming book (released in January), you get a complimentary photo session with a participating photographer and inclusion of the image of your choice on your page. It's a remarkable opportunity to give back to the community and to show off your children, family, pets, business, soccer team, play group, etc.

I am honored to be on the photographer team for the 3rd year, and I have some goodies in store for my clients who purchase a page in The Miracle 2012. For every $250 you spend on prints and other display items, you get a set of 25 custom holiday cards (last year the minimum was $500 to get 50 free cards). There will also be an opportunity to earn a free print of your Miracle Book image.

Austin Boxer Rescue Silent Auction: June 25, 2011 {Austin Baby Child Family Pet Photographer}

Hello hello hello!

This Saturday, Austin Boxer Rescue is holding their 4th Annual Silent Auction Fundraiser at Cool River Cafe from 3:00 to 5:00 in the afternoon. As you have probably discovered by now, I really enjoy raising money for worthy causes, primarily through my photography. Below you will see an image of the print that will be on display at the event. Up for bid is a custom pet portrait session plus a mounted 11x14 print, valued at $325.

I want to tell you about my three subjects, Gringo, Gemma and Cyrus. Gringo's front left leg was either injured at birth or shortly thereafter and had to be amputated (shhhhhh....he doesn't know it's missing!). Gemma is suspected to be a former bait dog and lost her right eye as a result of injury (the specialist did such a great job treating her, it looks like she's got a permanent wink). And sweet Cyrus, who was severely neglected, ended up with a broken jaw at some point, so his superlong tongue hangs out of the left side of his mouth, never the right. Despite their lives starting out in suffering, all three of them are healthy, happy and quite exuberant today!

These three doggies' mom is a friend of mine, and when I asked her if I could photograph them for my portfolio, she mentioned that the ABR fundraiser was coming up. So here we are, and I am thrilled to be part of this effort to help these magnificent creatures. Of course I love all dogs, but I've recently developed a special fondness for Boxers. Did you know they make great family dogs? While they are high energy and do require obedience training, they are fiercely loyal to their families, they are cheerful in temperament, and they are very playful and therefore lots of fun. They are also quite intelligent, and they rank high on the cleanliness scale. Gringo, Gemma and Cyrus are all of these things and more. Even Gemma, who tends to be shy, warmed up to me right away. I had so much fun spending time with all three of them! A special thanks to the good friend who let us use her back yard for the photo session. ; )

Dear Matthew,

Happy 10^th birthday! It blows me away that you were born a whole decade ago, and, remarkably, this milestone birthday just happened to fall on Mother’s Day. I’m glad we got to celebrate the day together. Congratulations on scoring the first goal for your team at your Lacrosse game today! That was fun to watch!

I am so grateful to have you for my son. Some believe that new souls on the verge of birth decide who their parents will be…..if that is the case, then thank you for choosing me to be your mom. I am honored. Thank you for letting me be such a significant part of your life. God knows I am far from perfect, but when you were a little baby, you made me feel like I was the best mother in the world. I loved you more than I knew was possible, and that love has grown every day for the past ten years.

I’ve seen you grow into a kind, intelligent, easy-going, graceful, confident, funny, attractive young man, no doubt a glimpse of what you’ll become in the next ten years. Even though I command you to “stop growing!” (ha!) I am kinda looking forward to what is yet to be. I’m thrilled that I get to witness it firsthand.

You’re now commencing your second decade of life and never again will your age be in the single digits. You are embarking on the years during which you will change from a boy to a man. You have so many adventures ahead of you, both trials and triumphs, and I want you to always remember that Dad and I are here for you, and we love you, no matter what. You’re really something, kiddo.

Nine Months of Newborns Contest ** Austin Baby Photographer/Austin Child Photographer

No April Fool’s here. My kids dished out enough of it today (heh, heh).

Rather, I am launching a project-slash-contest that starts TODAY and runs through the end of 2011. Effective immediately, for the next nine months, I’m looking for NEWBORNS (babies less than 2 weeks old) to photograph and create portrait art. I’m offering complimentary newborn sessions, specially-priced prints and the opportunity to earn custom birth announcements at no extra charge. From each session I will choose an Artist’s Favorite which will receive individual artistic treatment. These images will be entered in a “Nine Months of Newborns” contest that will run for the month of January 2012. It will be open voting, and the winner will receive a complimentary First Birthday session and 16x20 print, along with special one-time offerings to be revealed at a later date. This project is limited to three newborns per month so that I can give proper attention to everyone. That means each baby has at least a 1-in-27 chance of winning….find me another contest with better odds than that!

You may be wondering why I’ve decided to do this. Well, let me tell you…..

First, I LOOOOVE babies. Second, my kids are now 7 and almost 10 – I need my baby fix! Third, I’ve photographed way more kids than babies, and my body of work needs a little balancing. Fourth, I want to drum up a little excitement now that the weather is warm and the flowers have started to bloom. That’s pretty much it!

Greetings!

I hope you had a lovely Valentine’s Day! My husband is traveling on business, so I took my boys out for a yummy and healthy early dinner at the Steeping Room (to offset all that sugar, you know!). If you haven’t been to the Steeping Room yet, you are missing out. It’s one of my favorite restaurants, period.

I intended to post much sooner than now but I have been crazy-busy! In addition to the normal day-to-day stuff, I’ve been compiling a collection of prints and canvases to display at local businesses. I recently decorated the walls at the Starbucks at Four Points (FM 2222 & FM 620). I’m pretty excited about it, as this is the first time I’ve done something like this. I’ll be swapping things out over the next few weeks for variety. There will be a mix of people, pets and nature/art prints for your viewing pleasure. All are available for purchase, but please note that the people and pet ones will be available only to their own families. Please stop in for a latte and a look, and tell your friends! I’ve left some business cards at the counter, a few of which are good for a complimentary (free!) weekday session.

Also worth mentioning is the Miracle 2011, which was unveiled a couple of weeks ago at the annual gala benefiting Dell Children’s Medical Center. As soon as the link for the 2011 book is active, I will post it here so you can see it online. This year the book is more substantial than in previous years, with thicker pages, and more of them. I met some wonderful new clients and want to thank them once again for choosing me for their photos…..thank you!!

One last thing: I’ve got loads of ideas bouncing around my brain, including some promotions that I will describe in detail next time. One will be all about newborns and another will focus on animal companions. I’m working out the kinks right now….I want these promos to be compelling and fun!

Michelle has passed the torch.....

My dear friend Michelle Bynum, who has fought breast cancer for the past 5 1/2 years, went to heaven early this morning.

Here is a taste of the person she was (or rather, is, since I believe death is not the end) and what she meant to me:

Sweet Michelle,

I first met you sometime in 1998 when we were both working at Dell. I remember admiring your self-assurance and no-fail attitude from afar, but we didn’t have much of a connection at first. It may surprise you that I was even a little intimidated by you. I was not the most confident person at work back then. As time went on, we’d see each other here and there due to mutual friends, but it was not until years later that we would discover we really liked each other.

Jump ahead to 2005, when I heard from our friend Alison that you were diagnosed with breast cancer. Having lost my mother to this horrid disease in 1986, I was all too familiar with what lay ahead of you, and though we were not yet friends, you had my full support from the get-go. I was so upset to know that you had to bear this burden at such a young age and with such a young son. It wasn’t fair! Being a veteran runner in the Race for the Cure, I immediately joined your team, Michelle’s Angels, which your sister so lovingly organized in your honor. It was at that point that our friendship began to take hold, one of countless good things that came out of something so wretched.

Through the last 5½ years I have gotten to know the bold, charming, funny, beautiful, faithful, fabulous person that you are. I saw you each November at the Race for the Cure; had some long, heartfelt phone conversations with you; and had the privilege of celebrating your 38^th birthday with you in July—one that you weren’t sure you would see. During these years, you have become more than just a friend. You are someone I love dearly, a sister in the cancer-fighting community, and a huge reason why I started riding in the LiveStrong Challenge each October. I remember more than once at the end of an event, we’d give each other a big, long hug, and you’d whisper in my ear, “I know she’s so proud of you!” In the throes of your cancer battle, you cast your own worries aside and comforted me by remembering that I was also there for my mom. She is the reason that I started running in the Race for the Cure, but the past few years have been focused on you. Being part of the team that consistently raises the most money at the Race for the Cure in Austin…..well….it’s impossible not to be excited about that! But the stronger pull was just being around you. You spread joy wherever you go. Since your cancer-fighting journey started, I cannot remember a time when I was with you that you didn’t have a big smile on your face and gratitude in your heart.

Since your diagnosis, you coined two phrases that are quite telling: “Don’t waste my cancer,” and “Eat life with a big spoon!” You have managed to do both of these things exceedingly well. With all that you’ve accomplished—the publicity, community involvement, fund raising, and simply loving your friends, family and fellow females—you have taken something so “dark, devastating, scary and ugly” and squeezed an immeasurable amount of good from it. Take that, Cancer!

Sadly, even though you reached your 5-year milestone as a survivor last year, we knew that cancer would take you from us too soon. Though you beat the odds several times, God called you home early this morning. Heaven’s garden just became a more beautiful place with its newest blossom now fully open….

Michelle, you have touched my life in ways that I cannot explain, for which I will be eternally grateful. I am relieved that you are no longer suffering, but, selfishly, I want you back. We all do. I want to learn more of your life lessons! Rest peacefully, and know that we’ll take care of each other and keep your spirit alive by continuing your mission.

Since death does not equate stopping, I won’t say good-bye. Instead, I’ll say…..

'Before & After' / Austin Portrait Photographer

Imaging USA was sort of mind-blowing. The trade show was HUGE. I estimate that there were, oh, I don't know, about a gazillion new album manufacturers present. Among other types of vendors. There are always some bargains on the floor, and I came away with some software and a deal I couldn't pass up on a lens I've been wanting. The speakers were excellent. I was able to take it in for a couple of afternoons/evenings, and while the expo and seminars were fabulous, it was the meeting new people, socializing and trading knowledge and ideas that I found most valuable. Well worth the money and time spent to be there.

My husband always reads my blog entries, and he asked me about an image in particular from my previous post on the 17th. It's the third from the top, a grainy B&W shot of our younger son, Zach. It's not at all sharp and it's grainy (you can see this better if you click on it; it will pop up to full size on your screen). He said he was surprised that I included it among the other images because it was so different than what I usually show, and while he understands that there is an artistic element to it, he wasn't sure my other blog readers would 'get' it. So I'm using his concern as the topic of this post.

In most of my work, I tend to keep my subjects' features sharp, particularly the eyes. Sometimes it's fun to play and do things differently though, such as showing motion by using a longer shutter speed. Now, I have to admit, this shot of Zach was taken quite awhile back, before I really knew how to use my camera properly, and I was out shooting randomly to see what I could get. It's a fun exercise and a great way to learn more about how your camera works. Anyway, the little guy had just woken up from a nap (hence the crazy hair sticking up in all directions), and he had a fire in his belly that day. I remember chasing him all over the yard and having the best time watching him, and I wanted to document the severe bed head because it was so flippin' cute. Out of many shots, this one caught my attention.....I love his expression, his wild hair, and the motion in his little hands. I immediately converted it to B&W, and later I added the grain to make it look like it was captured perhaps in another decade on high speed film. It's not likely win any awards, but I love it and it makes me happy to look at it. It's truly a 'moment shot' -- completely natural and unplanned and essential. It's quite motivating to capture something unexpected and see the potential in it and then love the result, even if it's 'imperfect' or unconventional.

I like to share the 'before & after' from time to time, and I feel that this one calls for that.

I hope this inspires you to 'think outside the box' (sorry -- I know that saying is waaaaaay overused) when deciding what to display in your home. Images that move you and make you smile are sometimes the unexpected ones.

Imaging USA / Austin Children, Family and Pet Photographer

Imaging USA is back in Texas this year! It's one of the biggest professional photography conventions in the world, perhaps in the country, with over 13,000 people attending (I may have pulled that number out of a hat, but either way it a whole lot of photographers and the people who support them). It's the first big industry event of the year, comprising a huge trade show, learning programs, exhibits, awards, parties and general happenings focused on the art, science and business of photography. Essentially, it's one humendous and tremongous photography celebration. This year it's right down the road in San Antonio. I'm about to head down there today!

The first time I attended IUSA was in 2006, and what an eye-opener it was. Being there among all the greatness in this industry gave my small business a jolt filled with ideas, how-to's, encouragement and inspiration. Aspiring pros, please do yourself a favor: join PPA (Professional Photographers of America) and attend Imaging as soon as possible. Next year it's in N'Awlins.....laissez les bon temps rouler!

In the spirit of celebration, I leave you with some parting shots that have stuck with me. They're in no particular order or category, just some favorites of mine.

HAPPY 2011 / Austin children, family and pet photographer

Here we are, a few hours into Day Two of Two Thousand Eleven. I hope Day One was good for everyone! I spent the entire day of 01-01-11 getting started on Resolution Number One: RENEWING MY (and my family's) SPACE. This comprises several smaller (but not small by any means) projects, including: 1) dashing the clutter; 2) getting more organized (isn't that everyone's goal); 3) finishing painting the walls (!); and 4) updating the photos and portrait art in my home.

Why am I blogging this? Well....as you know, putting your plans/goals/dreams/intentions in writing increases the likelihood that they will come to fruition. And "putting it out there" makes you more accountable. AND I refer back to my blog fairly often, so this serves as a reminder.....

My first self-assigned task was to clear the kitchen desk (you know – those built-in desks in or near the kitchen) in order to make it USABLE. The cubbies behind the kitchen desk held the kids' school work from last year; that was the first to go. We keep some of it for posterity but most of it is now GONE. Yippee! Accomplishment! That was all it took to get me on a roll.

The fun thing about cleaning up and sorting through stuff is discovering things you've been looking for and things you didn't know you had which still provide amusement. The even more fun thing is tossing stuff that you no longer need....expired coupons, old receipts, business cards that you don't know why you have, etc. Long story short, I put four grocery sacks full of paper refuse into the recycle bin today. It never ceases to amaze me how much PAPER we humans consume. But I digress....

Be watching for New Things happening with Kimberly Sarantakes Photography in 2011. One thing I'm really excited about is adding frames from The Organic Bloom and Wild Sorbet to my offering. These frames are so flippin' cute, and they really add panache to portrait art. I just ordered my studio sample set from The Organic Bloom and I can't wait to get it!

Now, for Resolution Number Two: get more sleep. I think I'll start that one right now....

FOOD AS ART

We're still missing Gypsy like crazy (we looked at her puppy photos last night, which, of course, brought on the waterworks), but it's time to post something new. I created the images below on Thanksgiving and meant to post them the next day. More important stuff must have come up. Anyway, the subject in the first image below inspired a mini project for me that day. Those are Bluefoot mushrooms, which were selling at Whole Foods for.....(drumroll please)......$35.00 per pound! Now, before you question my judgment, don't forget that mushrooms are very light and airy and it takes a huge volume of them to make a whole pound. I think I spent about $2 on a handful of them, and I did toss them into my yummy mushroom gravy (thank you Dad for teaching me the art of gravy-making). They have a woody, earthy flavor that matches their appearance. Aren't they so pretty? Following them are sugar pie pumpkins, Cipollini onions, some kind of Rosé wine and homemade cranberry jelly. Just a sampling of our Thanksgiving feast this year....

GYPSY REST IN PEACE

GYPSY THREADZ SARANTAKES
1999 - 2010

Dear Gypsy,

Thank you for choosing me that spring day in 1999.

You were the most adorable little thing, with your zest for life and your little heart-shaped patch of white fur on your heinie, and you stole my heart when I spotted you with your litter mates. The PAWS Shelter was showing you off at Petco, and we'd been talking about getting a companion for Chief. We wanted a smart, loyal dog that we could walk off-leash, and you, being an Australian Shepherd, fit that description well. We didn't bring you home right away because Daddy wanted to be sure we were doing the right thing, but after a couple of days, we decided that if you were still available, we would adopt you. The kind folks at PAWS drove you all the way from Kyle to Round Rock (we were both working at Dell at the time), and thence began a deep human-canine bond that lasted for eleven and a half years.

You were a mess when you were a puppy. You whined relentlessly at night in your crate, you had repeated accidents in the house, and once, you ran underneath Chief when he was peeing, only to be the recipient of a doggy golden shower. We discovered early on that broccoli and you did not agree, and sheesh, did you have ENERGY! We were not quite ready for your exercise requirements and I think we frustrated each other some in the beginning. Still, you were, and have always been, the sweetest dog I've ever met. EVER. You were gentle with every single human being you ever met, including wild children who jumped on you and yanked your ears. What a divine dog you were.

You were best described as an attention-junkie, and because of this, it was very easy to teach you things. We'd tell you what we wanted you to do, and you would just do it. A simple look of approval was all the reinforcement that you needed. My favorite trick was probably getting you to speak after asking you, "Who let the dogs out?" Saying, "SQUIRREL!" had the same effect and always made me laugh. You were a fabulous entertainer.

I am so thankful that you were such a perfect companion for Chief. The two of you took to each other quickly and you were best buddies for as long as you were alive. It was so much fun watching you play and wrestle in the front yard. Like I said, you were a fabulous entertainer. I wish I could count the number of times you made Matthew and Zach laugh those wonderful, deep belly laughs that only kids can deliver.

I am so sorry that we weren't able to do more to ease your suffering in these last few weeks. When you lost your exuberance, and your joy was hanging on by a thread, it broke my heart. I wish I could have seen you do one more of your crazy spins and race around the front yard with Chief and Lucky. I was sure you'd be with us for at least another year or two, but December 2, 2010 was your day to go to Rainbow Bridge. Thank you for hanging on until the end of the day so that I could be with you when you crossed the threshold. Matthew, Zach and I witnessed your last breath, and I felt your last heartbeat. I hope that you were comforted by all of the love surrounding you.

I miss you already, my sweet Gypsy-girl. Sleep well, and may you finally catch whatever it is that you were chasing in your dreams......

RAGS 2 WAGS GALA / Austin Pet Photographer

This weekend is the 5th annual Rags2Wags Gala benefiting the Austin Humane Society. I am making a silent auction donation in honor of my dog, Lucky, whom I adopted in May from AHS (you can see her on the July 1 post). The display print, a 20x20 collage featuring 16 canine characters I've photographed over the past few years, just arrived this evening, and once again my lab did a flawless job. Hopefully this will grab the bidders' attention.............

Here is the back side of the promo cards......anyone who sees this post and mentions it is eligible for the complimentary 5x7 print when booking a pet portrait session with me. The 20% donation to AHS applies as well.

On a heavyhearted note, my sweet Australian Shepherd, Gypsy, has been very sick. Four weeks ago she suddenly collapsed after dashing across our front yard, which began a long and arduous (and expensive) process of trying to get a correct diagnosis. This is when you really wish dogs could talk! Long story short, we visited a veterinary cardiologist yesterday, and after an exam, x-rays and an ultrasound, we're certain that she has some sort of lung infection. I pray that she will respond to the antibiotics and nebulizer treatments. I've been talking about her non-stop (likely because I've spent so much time caring for her lately) and wanted to show her to my friends and clients. This dog is the sweetest, most tolerant dog I've ever known. And it's amazing how smart she is. These three images are all of Gypsy....she looks way different when she's shaved, huh. Please send happy thoughts and prayers our way.

Off to bed I am......after I tend to Gypsy that is. If anyone knows any tricks on getting a sick dog to eat, please share!

I am a fan of expressing gratitude sincerely, passionately and frequently, and the first thing I said to my boys when I saw them (yesterday) morning was......I have a project for you: why don't you either write or draw ten things that you are thankful for? They began their task as I went to pick up a few last-minute items for our Thanksgiving meal, and when I returned home, this is what I found:

It's obvious which one belongs to my first grader. What isn't obvious is the word in the upper left corner (the one overlapping the G in God). Z is thankful for transportation, in addition to God, Jesus, clothing, etc. I should also clarify that Smack is the name of our cat (no, I do not allow my children to indulge in illicit substances). I don't remember why we gave him that name, but somehow it fits.

My fourth grader started to draw a cheeseburger on one side of his paper but decided it would be faster and equally effective to simply write out those things for which he is thankful. By Food he means meat (especially if it's from Rudy's); he prides himself on being a carnivore – naturally because there are many days that his momma is a strict herbivore. I have to give him props on his consumption of fresh produce though. I'm sure I never tried kale when I was his age.

I am thankful for things too numerous to count, but if I could mention only one thing today, it would be that my Australian Shepherd, Gypsy, is feeling better. Three weeks ago, she had what appeared to be a seizure, after which she rapidly went downhill, losing her energy, appetite and joie de vivre. After five trips to the vet, several tests, and a having a heart monitor strapped to her for a week, we still don't know exactly what's wrong, but she is responding well to a couple of medications. I am thankful that we haven't had to tell her good-bye yet, and that we will probably have her for another holiday season. She is, hands down, the sweetest dog I have ever known. A real love junkie. And very smart, too.

My computer has decided to be obstinate at the moment so I'll include some new images in my next post. Off to re-boot......

Austin Humane Society 2011 Calendar / Austin Pet Photographer

I volunteered my services for the calendar and had the honor of capturing Levi the cat and my own dog, Lucky. SPOOKY / Austin children's photographer

We photographers joke that it's easier to photograph children who aren't our own. This is not always the case; sometimes my boys ask to have their picture taken. Most of the time, though, I'm the one making the request, and it helps to employ strong negotiation skills if I want good results. On Halloween evening, I told M & Z that if they gave me some good shots before we went trick-or-treating, I'd leave my camera at home (we always join friends in another neighborhood). Sure thing, Mom! Fortunately the light was pretty perfect when we went outside......our front yard often has beautiful light in the late afternoon and early evening, and Halloween was no exception.

LIVESTRONG and AHS Star Search Updates

Howdy!
The last few weeks have been a whirlwind! Several charity projects have kept me busy, and I've photographed several adorable canines and one energetic feline. And of course I've been looking after my two boys. My weekday afternoons belong to them. Last Sunday morning, however, belonged to me and to my family and friends affected by cancer. I rode 45 miles in the LIVESTRONG Challenge, and the weather couldn't have been more cooperative. Overcast skies and and cool breezes kept us comfortable, and -- no kidding -- the sun came out during my last mile as I was vocalizing a prayer of gratitude and supplication. I finished strong with a big smile on my face, high-fiving my kiddos and husband as I rode through the chute. I thought my allergies would end up dampening my enthusiasm, but I was absolutely wrong. I have not done all that many organized distance rides, but of the ones I have, the LIVESTRONG Challenge is my favorite. This year's was FAN-TAS-TIC.

A friend of mine asked me if it's too late to donate for this year. It's not! If you would like to make a contribution to help me reach my goal, please do! Sadly, I did not do the best job spreading the word this year (seriously? shame on me!), so I've decided to start waaaay ahead of time for the 2011 ride. And I'm planning to go back to 65 miles (I didn't train at all this year so I took it easy with the 45-mile route). To kick it off early, I created a collage with bits and pieces from my bike-riding life over the past two-and-a-half years, mostly LIVESTRONG stuff. You'll see it just below this post. Being the credit-conscious photographer that I am, I'll tell you that about 60% of the images were obviously not snapped by me (although I did enhance all of them) -- thank you to my husband, some fellow riders, the gal at the Chris Carmichael book signing, and Kreutz Photography for providing the original images. And to whoever took my mom's picture back in the 1950's.....guess which one that is? ; )

On a different subject, I am happy to tell you that my sweet dog, Lucky, made it into the Austin Humane Society 2011 Calendar! The Star Search was held a couple of weeks ago and I did manage to spread the word on this one. I am excited to be one of the official photographers for the 2011 calendar, and besides Lucky, I was assigned to photograph a beautiful, playful young cat named Levi. I'm told that the calendar will be available for purchase sometime in November.....I'll post it as soon as I know the exact date. The proceeds will benefit the AHS's efforts to help numerous dogs and cats find permanent homes.

LIVESTRONG Challenge Austin: 10-24-2010

Greetings!

LIVESTRONG Challenge Austin is coming up next weekend, October 23-24. I became involved with this event two years ago, right after I rekindled my passion for riding my bike. It's kind of a funny story.....I got my old mountain bike tuned up one day in the spring of 2008, and my husband said something like, oh that's silly, you won't ride that bike six times this year. My response: GAME ON. I think I rode just about every day that summer, and I decided very quickly that I wanted to ride in the 2008 LIVESTRONG Challenge. John noticed how serious I was, so he got me a dream bike for my birthday that October. I only had a few weeks to get used to it, but WOW, once I figured out how to unclip without falling over, I was hooked. I registered to ride 45 miles, and I think I raised about $1500, which earned me a really cool LIVESTRONG messenger bag (which I now use to tote my giggle-inducing props to photo sessions). The ride started out very well and I guessed it would take me about three hours to finish. Oops. I missed my turn for the 45-mile route and ended up riding 65 miles in the beautiful Texas Hill Country around Dripping Springs. And I loved every minute of it.

This particular ride is my favorite of all the distance rides I've done, not only because it's a beautiful, well-managed ride, nor because of the cause I'm supporting (although both of these are good reasons to participate). This ride is my favorite because I do it in honor of and in memory of many loved ones affected by cancer. It is one way for me to connect deeply with them. I lost my mom to breast cancer in 1986, when I was just 17, and of course she is my # 1 "In Memoriam." I can still hear her voice and her distinct laugh in my memories. Shortly before my first LIVESTRONG ride, I also lost a dear friend, Keri, who was my college roommate for a year and a half. She succumbed to colon cancer just weeks before her 40th birthday. And I can't forget my next-door neighbor, Bob, who was like a grandfather to me. He passed away in the mid-80's when I was barely a teenager. These are people who influenced my life tremendously and I am grateful for having known and loved them.

On a happier note, I have two girlfriends whose battles with cancer have brought me closer to them, and they are doing quite well today. My friend Michelle is a Stage 4 breast cancer survivor who just passed her 5-year mark since diagnosis, and she also celebrated her 38th birthday over the summer. My friend Traci is in remission from breast and thyroid cancers, and she recently went through surgery to get her "noobies." Both of these fine women are wives, mothers and bright, beautiful shining stars who inspire their friends and families on a daily basis. The photo below is of me with both of them at Michelle's surprise party in July. They are a huge reason why this ride is so important to me.

In addition to Mom, Keri, Bob, Michelle and Traci, I wear or carry with me the names of several others who fuel my desire to ride. Just today I added one to my list, a baby boy in Amarillo named Maverick, who was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma at 3 weeks of age. Bless his heart.

Howdy!

I haven't blogged in awhile and remembered that I was supposed to post some vacation shots from this summer. I still have a ton to sift through, but I was able to squeeze in this collage, which has a little of this and a little of that from Vancouver Island's western coast. I'm going to print this one for my husband's office......his company sponsored this trip so I think it's fitting for him to have a nice visual memory of it. It was such a beautiful, healthy place, although it was a bit chilly. And yes, that starfish really was bright purple!

Some more recent excitement: Austin Humane Society's "Star Search" for the AHS 2011 Calendar -- please vote for my dog, Lucky! Just go to the AHS home page....click here and then click on the Star Search link at the bottom of the page. You can scroll down to see Lucky and read her bio, and voting is a simple click and you're done. I am volunteering my services to AHS and will be photographing at least one of the winners sometime next week!

Next up: information on the LiveStrong Challenge, which happens the weekend of October 23-24. I am planning to participate in the bike ride on the 24th, riding either 45 miles or 65 miles. I need to raise a minimum of $250 to participate, and I'll include a link to my fund raising page next time I post here.

Gorgeous Gals / Austin Family Photographer

Hello my blog readers,
It's been awhile since I've posted because I've been playing catch-up and enduring some unwanted but necessary equipment maintenance. My focus has been on adequate storage and backup, which means several terabytes more than what I really need, but it's the only way I truly feel "safe" and able to stand behind my policy of holding onto my client images indefinitely. I found a fantastic IT guy who has been a tremendous help to me, and I am grateful beyond words -- thank you Joseph!!!

Anyway, the title of this post is "Gorgeous Gals" which I am sure you will agree fits beautifully (pun intended). I promised my client that I would show her the difference between sftc (straight from the camera) and "the works"....not that these gals needed much of it. All I did was punch up the contrast and sharpness a bit, clean up some flyaway hairs, tone down the undereye shadows (which EVERYONE has, even little babies), and enhance their eyes and smiles (just barely). Plus I added some vignetting around the edges (which has nothing to do with the subjects). I captured this one with my 50mm/1.8 lens (which makes it more like 65mm on my camera) at f/3.2 in natural light with no other equipment. Don't remember the shutter speed, but as you can see it's exposed well and the original looks pretty darn good on its own. Be sure to click on the image so you can see the enhancement details (it will pop up to a larger size).

I absolutely LOVE this image, not only because these girls are so easy on the eyes, but also because I believe it represents my style very well -- these girls were obviously ready to have their picture taken, and you can tell they were happy and enjoying the moment. That is my goal every time: that my subjects are willing, but more importantly that they are enjoying themselves.

In my last post I said I would post some images from my family travels, which will come shortly. I think I have around 800+ images to sift through -- yikes!

Quick Update / Austin Children's Photographer

Greetings from Tofino, Vancouver Island!

Just wanted to post a quick update. Traveling for the rest of the summer with my family, have my iPad with me and quite surprised to be getting a signal at the moment...my husband has been getting spotty service where we are, so of course I assumed it would be the same for me; he has broadband and I only have wifi. I am not moving one inch!

The kiddos start school on the 23rd so I'll be back in full swing in a few weeks. Those of you waiting on your orders will receive top priority. I thank you for your patience!

Next time I'll post some travel shots. Tofino is gorgeous, especially when the sun is out (an infrequent occurrence from what I gather). Next stop: Curacao. It is due to my husband's hard work and extensive business travel that we're able to take these trips this year...thank you John!

LUCKY DOG / Austin Pet Photographer

Salutations!

I've been talking about our new dog, Lucky, a lot, and it's about time I showed her off. We've had her for six weeks and I have to say, she is one of the sweetest dogs I've ever met. We saw her at the Austin Humane Society when we went to visit some rescue Chihuahuas on a whim. After a successful meet & greet with our other two canine companions, Chief and Gypsy, we brought her home less than a week after meeting her. Not sure what breed she is -- our vet* says she's a straight-up mutt -- but I suspect she's got a little bit of Lab in her, maybe part hound, too. She is super-smart and I just love her to pieces! Isn't she gorgeous?

The Miracle 2011 / Austin Children's Photographer

I am excited to be on the photographer team again this year for The Miracle Book, benefiting Dell Children's Medical Center.

The Miracle is a coffee table style photo book/calendar that is filled with professionally photographed images of children, grandchildren, families, pets, business donors, and patients and staff at Dell Children's Medical Center. To secure a page in The Miracle 2011, please visit www.childrensaustin.org/cmcf/themiracle. Each page is $500, which includes a complimentary session with a participating photographer, who will submit your favorite image to be printed on your page. It also includes a copy of the book itself. Additional copies are $80 each.

I am thrilled with how well this year's book turned out! It was such fun to see it for the first time -- I love looking at all the beautiful shots of so many cute kids, many of whom I have known for years. This year I am planning to offer a special portrait package to donors who choose me for their Miracle image(s).....we usually finish around holiday portrait time, so this package will include display prints and holiday cards. It's my way to say thank you for choosing me and for donating to this worthy cause.

Who besides me is completely amazed that we are already ONE THIRD into 2010?! I cannot believe that my last post was in December. Life has been happening while making other plans. However, despite the lack of timely updates, I am keeping my promise: I said my next post (this one) would include the images that were selected for the 2010 Miracle Book. It was unveiled in January at the DCMC gala, so I am certain that all donors have received their copies by now. ; )

Don't you agree that all of these kiddos fall into the category of "eye candy"? (And the grown-ups look quite smashing themselves!)

BTW, if you chose option "d" above.....you would be partly correct. After an exceedingly busy fall season I went into hibernation for awhile to keep my sanity. Break time often results in fresh creativity, so keep checking back for new visual treats and special offers. I'm making a new promise right now (as much to myself as to my readers): more frequent updates!

Overdue Update

I promised that this post would be images from Miracle Book sessions. In retrospect, I should have said that I wouldn't be back until the Miracle Book is unveiled, which won't be until next month. I certainly don't want to spoil the anticipation by showing those images here. However, I also mentioned a few posts back that I would show the "pool jump shot" from one of the sessions. So here it is! I have to say again, these eight cousins were wonderful subjects. Such beautiful and well-behaved children.

Eight Siblings / Cousins

These images are from a recent Miracle Book 2010 session. When I first heard that I would be photographing EIGHT children in a wide range of ages, I have to admit I was a bit nervous. That is a lot of kiddos to orchestrate! Would they be willing and cooperative? As it turned out, the answer was......YES. Oh.My.Gosh. They were SOOOO good. And FUN. Not to mention, gorgeous. All of them. They are all related to each other, either siblings or cousins. At the end of the session, we decided it would be a great idea for them to jump into the pool with their jeans and shirts on, which, of course, they loved. This is the shot of the aftermath...I should probably post "the shot" of them jumping in, too, huh...check back later for that!

Three Sibs from Last Fall

This storyboard resulted from a silent auction win at Cattle Baron's Ball (which raises funds for the American Cancer Society). I photographed the whole family and they just laughed and had a great time together...which made the session fun for me, too! Very happy people. This is a sneak peek of an item that they ordered. Incidentally, I added the frame to separate the image from the white background...it's not part of the final print. Enjoy!

When Life Gives You Lemons...

When it rains, it pours. This is great for the grass but not so great when you are a natural light photographer who shoots primarily outdoors. Just as I was arriving at a session this morning, down came the rain, accompanied by substantial bolts of lightning. So there we were, trying to decide whether it would blow over, and I thought it would be worth a try to set up a white background next to a large window in the house. M and D were wearing white and light blue, and the precious 4-week-old puppies that served as live "props" are mostly white, so it seemed like a no-brainer. Not today...the sky was just too dark this morning. So what do you do when you've spent time moving furniture, setting up equipment, and directing two kids and five teeny puppies (and then photographing them, of course)? You find at least one usable shot and do something with it. This one was the winner. B&W should not be about rescuing images, but sometimes it really does bring out the best in a particular composition. For this shot there was no question about it. Even so, the plan was to shoot in the back yard, so we are going to try again tomorrow. Dare I hope that the rain cools things down, at least for a day or two? Thank you to this family for the privilege of photographing these gorgeous kids and sweet puppies. I am excited to see what we get next with an outdoor setting and cooperative weather!

Miss E's Birthday

I do not normally photograph birthday parties, but I will do it on occasion if I can. Today I was honored to capture the 4th birthday of this precious little girl. Need I say that I am thrilled to have been there? The party was at this very cool, old-timey candy shop in SoCo...every child's idea of heaven! I gave the first photo an antiquey feel to match the era of the candy shop. The second one is probably my favorite from the day; just look at those gorgeous eyes! A big thank you to her mom & dad for asking me to do this for them!

Guess Which One Is Mad At Mom?

Yesterday was Western Day at camp, and all the kids were encouraged to don their "best bib and tucker." Did these two think they would escape without a photo? One of them was willing to give me his "tough cowboy" look and the other was just pi$$ed...guess which one doled out the sass on the way to camp? Earlier in the day as I was taking my morning walk, I was graced by the beauty of a blue sky scattered with lots of white, cottony clouds...when I witness natural beauty of this magnitude, it just further affirms my faith in a Loving Creator. Being outside as the sun peeks over the horizon, listening to the birdies sing to each other, enjoying the vim of a new day -- it's a gift. I hope y'all enjoy many gifts on this day. It's no secret that I love bees. I love their cute little yellow and black striped bodies and transparent wings, but even more, I love them for what they do for us...particularly because they enable us to have flowers and honey. It seems fitting to tie the above quote into the busiest (and hardest) but most rewarding job ever: motherhood. All of you mommies our there, I love you for all the beauty and sweetness you inspire. I know you often feel like the mosquito, but you are all bees in my book.

Holy cow! It has been a long time since I have posted! I have been very busy with my kiddos, but also with some exciting things photography-related. First, I am in process of building my new, official, professional website. FINALLY. Second, I am happy to announce that I have been chosen as one of the official photographers for the Dell Children's 2010 Miracle Book! I have already conducted my first session for this important fund raiser...once we narrow it down I will be sure to post some shots of the beautiful kids from that day.

The most recent excitement for the Sarantakes family was our spring break in Steamboat. We had both boys skiing down everything except black runs...for those of you who know Steamboat, you know that it is a huge mountain with tons of different terrain, much of it quite challenging for those of us who only ski one week each year. Especially this year when half the mountain was icy in the morning and then slushy in the afternoon. The weather was gorgeous though, and we had a blast. These are some shots of us having fun while we were there.

Gotta go...off to ride my bike before I get the boys from school!

If you have not watched this short (23-minute) film, you are missing a beautiful story that transcends race, culture, creed and religion. I watch it every year with my kids, and every year I cry. The final words of the narrator say it all: Aaron’s heart was filled with joy and love, and he knew at last that the hate he had carried there was wrong, as all hatred will ever be wrong. For more powerful, more beautiful by far than all the eons of sadness and cruelty and desolation which had come before, was that one tiny crystalline second of laughter. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God! Howdy!

I was in the right place at the right time with my boys for these shots. The room had these floor to ceiling, frosted glass windows and this cool, heavily textured grey wallpaper. Happily, I had my camera with me, and M & Z were willing to cooperate. Snap!

Later that day, I got a lucky shot of my dog, Gypsy. This image really captures her energy and sweet spirit. She smiles like that all the time.

Greetings!

I don't plan to be a daily blogger but I felt compelled not to have just one lonely post. Also, I am excited to use this space to show some of my recent work! I just delivered some canvases to a client (who is seriously the best client I could ask for in terms of being excited about the work I've done for her), and they turned out fabulously. Beautiful kids + beautiful morning = successful shoot. These are a couple of the images from that session.

I'm holding off on Facebook for now, but I have been needing a blog for my photography business.
